Threats of Public Wifi

How to Stay Safe

In order to stay safe on public wifi, there are a few things that you can do. Some of these include visiting only websites using HTTPS connection, limiting AirDrop and File Sharing, using a VPN, virtual private network, using an antivirus, and keeping your firewall enabled. Using a VPN is the most secure way to access the internet while on public wifi due to the fact that your data is encrypted and difficult for hackers to access. Your IP Address is also very difficult to access because your connection is sent through multiple proxy servers.

Phishing

Phishing is a tactic used by scammers and hackers to gain access to your log-in information or other credentials. To do this, they impersonate a company or person. They set up a fake webpage or send a fake email or text message to the target. By entering your credentials on the webpage that you are redirected to, they gain access.

How to protect against Phishing

To protect yourself from phishing, do not open links or emails from people or email addresses that you do not recognize. This cannot entirely make sure that you are safe, however, as there are ways for phishers to disguise the email address or phone number that the message is being sent from. You should also be aware of the status of all of your accounts so that you do not easily fall for the bait.
